Nelly's ( Elli Seraidari )
|
She was born in Aidini of Mikra Asia and
she studied photography in Germany. In 1924 she opens her
first studio in Athens. Her work is influenced from the
neoclassicism but it is also moments that are always vigorous,
and with references in the classic antiquity. She is a
most excellent possessor of the photographic technique.
Her nudes in Athens Acropolis, no matter the reactions
that they cause, they make her name well known. In 1939
in front of the imminent war she goes to New York and there
she continues her commercial and artistic work. Her photographic
work is very big but also very unequal.
In any case she had the luck to enjoy general recognition
and to see her work in reports and albums. Cover and publications
in LIFE magazine, exhibitions in New York, even if the
line of photographs with the double portraits of ancient
statues and modern Greek villagers, proof of race continuity,
is for laughter. The portraits of statues in any case are
a joy. It is however one period that anything Greek enjoys
big estimate and support in the western world because of
the Albanian epic initially and the resistance, and because
of the civilian war later and all that are in her favour.
Her photographic archive belongs to the Benaki museum.
