Kostas
Balafas was born in the village Kipseli of Arta and he
studied dairy-farming. He participates in the National
resistance
and he photographs. From 1951 he worked in the D.E.I.
where he continued photographing with the same passion
around all Greece. His rural origin has surely determined
his photographic glance that is direct and intensely
sentimental. Kostas Balafas belongs in the generation
of post-war Greek photographers who with their work set
the path of the Greek photography, beyond the fact that
they essentially created Greek photography. His photographic
work is not just a paid order of some organism, but the
call of a simple daily person, and a solitary artistic
luminous way in hard and strange photographic paths.
An active, important teacher for all us newcomers up
to this day. With this occasion, through the few words
that I write here for him, I would like to mention how
important it is to finally honour completely en life
our big photographers and no to wait for their loss in
order for us to begin the hommages and elegies..
